Challenges with New Ventures, Sudden Changes in the Market Free Essay Example, 2000 words

The entrepreneur upholds a managerial mindset that not only unlearns traditional management principles, and new structural forms that not only allow for change but help create it. New businesses ventures contain a certain level of risk. Entrepreneurial risks are assessed by taking into account the demographic and market positions of the economy. It is not necessary that all business succeeds or all business fails, it depends upon the investment and economic consequences which are crucial for the entire surrounding economic community. Risks are assessed in the light of possible operating obstacles and threats that are external to the enterprise and are often less controllable by operating management. These include prevailing economic conditions, market uncertainty, unpredictable results and Government attitudes. The geopolitical attitude of the government can also pose unpredictable situations and threats to a newly formed venture, like unwillingness to accept market liberalisation, retaining its reliance on the continuation of trade barriers and protectionist policies. A newly formed enterprise can be affected by the socio-political atmosphere of the country with respect to future commercial development. Other factors affecting new ventures performance includes the extent and pervasiveness of crime and corruption, market fluctuations etc. We will write a custom essay sample on Challenges with New Ventures, Sudden Changes in the Market or any topic specifically for you Only $17.96 $11.86/page

Richard Wright And Ralph Ellison Essay - 1715 Words

According to August Wilson’s story, Fences, from the first scene of the play to the end, the center of attention is mainly on Troy, a character who continues to experience racial intolerance. The racist culture in which he dwells in has positioned him as nothing other than a servant to the Whites as a garbage collector in the center of the city Pittsburg. At the same chronological point in time, African American writers of the present time, such as Richard Wright and Ralph Ellison, symbolically expressed the infuriating effects of American societal setting on the African- American consciousness. The Du Bois’ idea of double awareness posited a class of educational duality which all black Americans had to battle with. (Majeed 235). He distinct it as a duplicated consciousness burdened with the dread of existing in the American world which yield him no true self-consciousness, but only let him see himself in the course of the revelation of the universe. The notion of doubl e awareness was developed into the distinction between outer life and inner life as a way of characterizing Du Bois’ views. The interior life of the black American was for domestic use and may become better through nurturing. On a side note, art was a vital aspect of nurturing. Art should be used as a mechanism to fight back against racism, which is part of the outer life of the black people. It could also be a well thought-out shield in political battle. In reference to Fences, racial discrimination isShow MoreRelatedBlack Writers of the 20th Century Essay975 Words   |  4 PagesThree authors in particular, Ralph Ellison, Langston Hughes, and Richard Wright became some of the most influential and important writers of the 20th century, owing to their own history and life experiences to give life and meaning to their works. Art Essay on Ohio Pottery free essay sample

Lawton had actually been in the pottery life style for a long time he used to work for Florence Pottery in Mt. Gilead, Ohio. He used to work as the General Manager there until it burned down. The real beginning of his career was when he was 13 and he started to work for The Ohio Pottery Company and he just went on from there. During all the years that the company was operational there was no change in owner ship until he sold it and it became something else, the company had another building at one point and it was completely dedicated to creating lamp bases. But at some point in time there was a accident and the building burned down. After that they were moved to the main building and they had centralized production. There isn’t much information that was left behind about Gonder Pottery, so we don’t know how many people worked there. We will write a custom essay sample on Art Essay on Ohio Pottery or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Now if you had wanted to buy a piece today that the company had made there is a wide variety of items and the price range is from $4 all the way to $2500! As I had mentioned earlier that there is very little information left about this company for whatever reason but from the information we do have I was able to deduce that they mostly made vases but they are known for making good lamp bases. Generally they use stoneware in all their pottery and they were known for a few of their glazes too. Their special glazes were Flambe glaze which Gonder described as â€Å"fire red with streaks of yellow† and there was the gold crackle finish. There weren’t really any reoccurring themes in their work because it was mostly mass production type things. Their pieces were actually really cheesy; the pieces were like butterflies and just animal heads and things of that cheesy nature. They did have a back stamp on their pieces there were a few but they were pretty generic it said things like: GONDER, GONDER USA, ect. This is one of the stamps they used later on, on pots. The Gonder Company had many lines of production but most of their ceramic pieces used solid colors or a slight mixture of two dark colors where the difference is so miniscule. Their pieces are mostly smooth looking with not much texture except for maybe a few waves. Although they did have some textured pottery but major of them were smooth. They liked to use organic lines in a lot of their pottery and mostly used warm colors with the occasional cool color here and there. Many of Gonders pottery has a sort of natural feeling like you have seen something like it before in nature but it usually has some sort of twist to it. The first picture is that of a pot which has fish heads at the bottem but the shape and colors make it look like something out of the ocean. Also something to notice is the colors on the pot they look as though they are dripping down which is seen in a lot of Gonder’s Pottery. Market Research for Retail & Distribution - myassignmenthelp

Question: Discuss about theMarket Research for Retail Distribution Management. Answer: Introduction Consumer behaviour and consumer buying decisions have a key role to play in any business organization. Children and their responses to the sale promotions have a major impact on the buying decisions of the parents, thus altering the familys consumer behaviour. This assignment highlights the findings from the given article and analyses how these findings could be used successfully in one of the major brands of Sydney, namely Coles. Discussion According to the article by (Boland et al. 2012), children have a key role to play in influencing the purchase behavior of their parents and the family. The various sales promotions such as the buy one-get one (BOGO) offer are often a lucrative one for the children. They often claim that since the items are on sale, hence they should indulge in buying the items. As children tend to learn the daily life terminologies, it has been observed that they tend to develop idea regarding the sales and pricing of various items (Charry and Demoulin 2014). Children of age 5-12 years, accompanying their parents in any shopping session, have the power of influencing the purchase decision of their parents (Boland et al. 2012). As a marketing manager of Coles, it is important to ensure that promotional activities that are attractive to the children be incorporated in Coles. This will have a significant influence on the purchase decisions of the consumers. Incorporation of the promotional offers such as BOGO offer, or high discounts on the products of the interest of children is useful for affecting the purchase behavior (Boland et al. 2012). The childrens buying power is strong along with the persuasive power to persuade their parents to buy a particular product (Charry and Demoulin 2014). However, the powers of the children have often being ignored in context of influencing the purchase decisions. The findings of the article by Boland et al. 2012, highlights that most of the children prefer to persuade their parents to buy the products that is on sale. Moreover, the awareness about the percentage of sale given on each item is also a determining factor for the purchase decision of the children (Williams et al. 2013). Thus, in Coles, it is important to ensure that items such as stationeries, chocolates, beverages for children, chips and biscuits need to be given on discounts or sale (Matthes and Naderer 2015). Moreover, in order to ensure the launch and sale of a new product, discounts and promotions will attract the children, thus influencing the buying decisions of their parents. The perceived value of the various products, among the children is high and they are well aware of the discounts, sales as well as promotions. Conclusion The children have a major power to influence the buying decisions of their parents and family. Moreover, they are well-aware of the discounts and promotions that are given in the stores, while they go for shopping with their parents. Thus, it is essential that the top brands of Sydney, such as Coles, use this power in the children to enhance their business and sales. Animal Farm Essays (1331 words) - Fiction, Literature, British Films

Animal Farm The Importance of Squealer Sly, greedy, and crafty are just a few characteristics that describe Squealer in the book Animal Farm by George Orwell. This pig is also a messenger, an actor, a great persuasive speaker, a follower, and an outstanding liar. Hes nimble, hes clever, hes manipulative and most of all hes sneaky. Squealer uses his intelligence to persuade the other animals on the farm into doing what Napoleon wants, even if they dont really want to do it. He uses his craftiness and cunning to persuade the animals into thinking that he is on their side and hes doing all he can to help them out. His acting ability misleads the animals into thinking that hes one of their closest friends and that he can be trusted with all their secrets. Squealers slick style makes him an important character in the book Animal Farm by George Orwell. Squealers first manipulative deed is committed when he tells the other animals on the farm that the pigs are going to get the windfall apples and the milk from now on. He uses his persuasive speaking skills to talk the other animals into understanding why the pigs were doing this. Squealer explains to the other animals that the pigs are taking the milk and apples merely for their own health and nothing else. He uses this excuse of the pigs taking the apples and milk for their health to persuade the animals into thinking that they should give them the windfall apples and milk without questions. Squealer then says to the animals Comrades! You do not imagine, I hope, that we pigs are doing this in selfishness and privilege? (Orwell 42). He then goes on to say Milk and apples contain substances absolutely necessary to the wellbeing of a pig. We pigs are brain workers, the organization of the farm totally depends on us (Orwell 42). Saying the pigs are taking the apples and milk in the goo d of the other animals is one good example of his manipulative ways because, he then says that Jones will come back if they dont let the pigs have the apples and the milk. Immediately after Squealer says that Jones will come back, it makes all the animals want to give the extras to the pigs. Squealer uses this fear of Jones coming back as one of his main arguments to persuade the animals on the farm to believe him. Another good example of Squealers persuasive talents, is when Napoleon drives Snowball off the farm using his dogs that he trained himself. Napoleon has Squealer go around the farm and explain to the animals the new arrangements of the farm since Snowball was banished off the farm. Squealers main objectives in his speech to the animals of the farm is to give good reasons why Napoleon drove Snowball out of the farm, to put down Snowball as much as possible, and to make all the animals want to be commanded and cared for by Napoleon. One of the ways Squealer brings up Napoleons status in the farm is by saying he has taken on more responsibility for himself. Squealer then goes on to says Comrades, I trust that every animal here appreciates the sacrifice that Comrade Napoleon has made in taking this extra labor upon himself. Do not imagine, Comrade, that leadership! Is pleasure! On the contrary, it is a deep and heavy responsibility. No one believes more firmly than Comrade Napoleon, that all animals are equal (Orwell 59). He then puts down Snowball to make the animals see Napoleons side even more. Once again Squealer uses the argument of Jones coming back and once again this argument is unanswerable for the animals of the farm. Then he goes on to say that Napoleon is always right and Boxer adopts this as one of his maxims. Squealers speaking ability is his primary talent he uses. Squealers great skills with manipulating words are put to the test when some of the animals start to rebel against Napoleon. In this example he tells the other animals that Snowball was teamed up with Jones to try to recapture the farm from the animals to take the rebelling out of there minds.

Specific Heat Capacity Essay Example

Specific Heat Capacity Essay Example Specific Heat Capacity Paper Specific Heat Capacity Paper In this experiment, we are going to use a calorimeter (a solid metal block of aluminium). And we are going to expose it to different temperatures and measure the difference in temperature over time.  We will also measure the changes in electric properties from the heater over time: Volts and Amperes. In order to get more precise data, we are going to repeat this experiment twice with different power and the second trial will use stronger voltage. The reason that we are going to perform two trials is to try to minimize the error due to heat lost. The value that we get is 528 J Kg-1K-1. Theoretically, the Specific Heat Capacity of Aluminium is 897J g-1  ½K-1. I presume that we may have lost some of the heat to the air as well as to metal expansion. In order to minimize the error due to heat, we repeated the same experiment with different levels of power. This allows us to minimize the uncertainties due to heat loss by isolating them from the original equation.  Even though we were tried to lower the value of error, it was difficult to minimize it without completely insulating the calorimeter. There are some doubts about the fact that the heater is sometimes warming the calorimeter quickly, whilst it sometimes takes a longer period. I am not sure about the reason for this phenomenon. Sensible variations were detected during the experiment. A suggestion would be to use a more accurate heater or digital thermometer for further testing.  In order to get more precise data, we should definitely insulate the calorimeter to minimize its heat lost to the surroundings. For instance, we may place bubble wrap, foil or Styrofoam around the calorimeter.  To obtain more accurate results in the future, a good idea may be to perform the experiment more than twice. Even if the heat loss variable is set aside after more than one experiment, we might get more reliable data by overcoming the variations we have observed in heat transmission between the heater and calorimeter. The specific heat capacity of the objects can be calculated because the heat gained in the reaction is equal to the heat lost during the reaction. Due to the concept of thermal equilibrium we know that when objects of differing temperatures are in contact with each other, in this case the block, the water and Aluminum calorimeter they will eventually transfer heat to the point at which they are the same temperature. By measuring the temperature before the blocks were added to the water and then again when the temperature remains constant indicating equilibrium temperature the change in temperature was able to be calculated and using this along with the mass of the objects and water and calorimeter the specific heat capacity could be calculated using the Q=mc?T formula. For the How cold is it in the freezer compartment? question an aluminum block was placed in the freezer and then placed into the water in the calorimeter of which the temperature had been recorded. The temperature of the water with the Aluminum block was recorded until the constant temperature was reached. With this we can calculate the initial temperature of the aluminum block which gives us the temperature of the freezer. Evaluation: There were several limitations in the equipment used to carry out the procedure.  The scale used to measure the mass of the aluminum calorimeter and water only measured up to 200g this was a major limitation as it only allowed for a small amount of water to be added to the calorimeter which may have affected the heat transfer as the submerged block may not have been fully submerged therefore some heat may have been lost to the air. In moving the heated block from the boiling water to the calorimeter the block could have lost heat but this would be minimal due to the relatively high Specific heat capacities of the blocks.  When the block was moved into the calorimeter it was dropped into it and this caused some water to splash out which would decrease the mass of water in the calorimeter which could affect the overall temperature change.  The value for the specific heat capacity (shc) of object one which was Iron was compared to the theoretical value for the shc of Iron and gave a 17.6% difference this value is relatively high and could be due to uncertainties in the measurements and errors produced from the procedure. The % difference of object two was very large at 31.3% this could be due to random error but more likely due to the block not being fully submerged as I mentioned earlier.  The value of the percentage difference for Object3 which was Copper was relatively high at 17.2%,  In order to improve upon the experiment a scale that measures up to a higher mass such as 500g. Another method to improve the experiment would be to add more water to the calorimeter in order to insure the block was fully submerged. Another improvement that could be made would be to not drop the blocks into the calorimeter and therefore minimize the risk of losing water after the mass was taken.

Valuing Diversity Policy Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Valuing Diversity Policy - Assignment Example All said, this can make for an interesting work experience, where anyone with an open mind, eyes and ears can learn from each other (Thiederman, 2008, 45). The variety of experiences and inputs that people bring to an organization like Home Hunters enriches its culture. As such, there is clearly a need for a policy that encourages and values, rather than stifles diversity in the workplace. This is the business imperative for diversity in the workplace. Though some regard diversity as a stumbling block, modern and expanding organizations like ours have to recognize, embrace and value diversity for what it means. A multicultural workforce working together can do so much more than another all coming from the same background, having the same beliefs and ideas and wanting to do things in the same manner from beginning to end, day in and day out. An organization is bound to stagnate and disintegrate in the absence of new ideas and new ways of doing things. Diversity also means that we look inward and outward of ourselves with a new perspective, be ready to face new challenges and create and harness new opportunities, in line with the ever-changing business scenario. We have our strengths and weaknesses, and will develop and choose strategies that give us the best chances of surviving and prospering in the marketplace. Now that Home Hunters has progressed to a national entity and the name of our company and its products and services are rapidly gaining acceptance and familiarity in a number of communities, it is imperative that we create and adopt a well considered diversity policy. Diversity is a cornerstone of equality at work, and encourages equal opportunity for all. It is anti-discriminatory because no one would be disqualified from seeking employment at Home Hunters because of his or her ethnicity, color of skin, language, religious or even sexual preferences. Diversity encourages affirmative action and equal opportunity for all. Encouraging diversity at Home Hu nters would also help build and maintain competitive advantage, as problems, opportunities and strategies can be examined and evaluated from a variety of perspectives before implementation. This is the value of diversity contributing to the richness of ideas. For a prospective home owner, nothing can be sweeter than to hear a sales representative explain to him or her, the pros and cons of buying a house in a certain locality in the native language. This creates a bond between buyer and seller and can be used to sell more houses to similar ethnic groups. All this is possible with diversity, and will certainly reflect favorably on profits and revenues. IMPLEMENTATION OF THE DIVERSITY POLICY: It is one thing to value diversity, but it is another thing to successfully implement a diversity policy across an organization. It takes a lot of thought and effort to consider which aspects of company policy need to be included or excluded from the diversity initiative (Barak, 2010, 6). Other p olicies made earlier may also have to be revamped in the light of the diversity initiative. Once the changes have been made and the new policy created, it would have to be evaluated by Human Resources and the Policy Committee comprising of the CEO and department heads in our organization. The need for a diversity policy has also been pointed out by the Good Governance Committee as one of the hallmarks of good and efficient governance in an

Determination Of Nitrate Ion In Treated Wastewater Effluent Lab Report

Determination Of Nitrate Ion In Treated Wastewater Effluent - Lab Report Example The possible causes of errors may result from wrong or inaccurate readings made in the spectrophotometer. The spectrophotometer is in use to measure the intensity of red color produced when nitrate reacts with the acid, sulfanilic and N- naphthyl ethylenediamine. The lack of calibration of the equipment causes errors in results. The equipment may record a reading higher or below the one expected. Errors result from measurements done by using flasks and pipettes. When experimenters fail to monitor the readings properly, the final value of concentration will be affected.    For example, observers of volumetric readings should look at the lower meniscus to prevent these errors. Such errors will affect dilution and dissolving of solids in solutions (Woody 12).   The possible causes of errors may result from wrong or inaccurate readings made in the spectrophotometer. How the cold war promoted the civil rights movement in america, and how it promoted change

How the cold war promoted the civil rights movement in america, and how it promoted change Introduction. Cold war refers to the conflict between the nations that supported communism and they were headed by the Soviet Union and those that supported democracy and they were headed by the United States. The cold war was fought propaganda, fiscal warfare, political arguments and through martial conflicts at times. The cold war is said to have began around 1947 when President Truman of the United States affirmed his policy against communism thereby provoking a cold war commenced between the United States and the Soviet Union (Anonymous, 2002, 2). The war is said to have began as a result of the clear cut differences in the governance between the United States and the Soviet Union. For instance, in the United States, the populace had the privilege to select their own leaders and again they were allowed to come up with their own political organization and allowed the privileges to gather in the form of meetings and free communication (Anonymous, 2002, 3). While in the Soviet Union, the communist party had the mandate to select the people who would constitute the government, they had no right to form their own political movements; they were also not allowed the privilege of free communication and gathering (Anonymous, 2002, 4). Another possible cause of the conflict was as a result of global trade. While the United States wanted free trade among the various countries, the Soviet Union was trying to prevent its member countries from trading with the other countries in the world. Russia for instance, was hesitant in opening up to the rest of the western countries through trade since it was afraid of this having an influence on its autocratic governance. This therefore created a lot of tension between the United States and the Soviet Union. At the end of the World War 2, Europe had collapsed and so the international power was split between the United States and the Soviet Union. As a result of this, a lot of tension developed between these two unions as each one of them struggled to gain control over the world countries. Initial war started during peace agreement conferences and it got deepened when President Truman declared his policy against communism (Dudziak, 2006, 3). The Soviet Union had already begun expanding her influence in Europe even before the world war came to an end. It did this by deploring its red army to various parts of Europe and by the time the war came to a halt, it was already in control of a larger portion of the eastern side of Europe (Dudziak, 2006,4). The communists controlled the voting process in Europe and even won the first election and retained the powerful ministries of defense and military in the newly created government. Other factors that promoted the cold war was the Americans response to Russians influence on Europe which was rather quite negative, this furthered the bad blood between these two unions(Dudziak, 2006, 5). The reasons behind the establishment of civil rights movements. The ingress of the United States into the world war caused it a lot; for instance, a good number of the Americans were forced to move into the coastal lands around the Pacific, Atlantic and the Gulf in order to provide labor in the war industries. At the end of the war, America was significantly better placed after the war than several other countries that had been involved in the war. The GI Bill was passed in 1944 in order to provide support for the people who had been involved in the war to access education and economic development (Dudziak, 2006, 4). The Americans therefore looked for all the means and opportunities to rebuild their lives. Though not all of them got an equal chance in exploring the available opportunities. The whites had an advantage in all this and were able to be better placed economically than the other groups such as the Hispanics and African Americans (Dudziak, 2006, 4) These groups, commonly known as the minority groups developed an aggression in fighting for their civil rights in order to enjoy the complete rights and privileges that had been indicated in the constitution after the war (Dudziak, 2006, 5). The uprising of the civil rights movements in the US. The civil rights movements in the USA refer to a fight especially by the African Americans to acquire equal. Civil rights as all the other Americans. This movements had a lot of influence on America and they lead to an improved approval of constitutional rights and it also exposed the country to the pervasiveness and cost of racial discrimination. As a result of this, the African Americans came together with the some of the whites in the United States to protest against bigotry that was real in the US. For quite some time during the world war, a few African Americans had united to fight for equal rights but after the world war quite a number of the civil rights movements came into the limelight. A significant period in the civil rights movements occurred between the years 1950s and 1960s when strong civil rights lobby groups were formed and Martin Luther king Junior became the head of these civil rights pressure groups (Dudziak, 2006, 7). King arranged remonstration through public meetings, embargos and demonstrations. His expectation was that the individuals who were seeking equal rights through tranquility and courteous would be in support of the movements that he believed supported peaceful lobbying for the equivalent privileges for both the whites and the blacks. In 1964 and1965 (Dudziak, 2006, 7), the movements succeeded in having the central government pass the civil rights act and the voting rights acts. These acts abolished racial segregation, pledged the African Americans equal defense by the constitution and also guaranteed them the right to vote. Even though these acts were passed and the African American were really impressed, the civil rights movements did not stop here as the African Americans continued fighting for equal remuneration and access to educational opportunities for the blacks and the whites(Dudziak, 2006,8). The cold war and the civil rights movements in the US highlight the correlation between the American approach to racism within its borders, across the borders and the international relations during the period just after the world war two. A weak correlation between the American home policy and foreign policy on racism and discrimination was evident during this period because racial discrimination (Dudziak, 2002, 76) economic and social inequalities and racial violence continued in the US. This sparked lot of international protests and the image of the United States became tainted internationally. It was rather absurd to have the United States trying to shape discrimination in the other countries while it could not handle the discrimination within its own walls. In order to correct its tainted image, the United States defended itself by claiming that the existence of so many races within the country was a strong sign of racial equality in the country. The American government also decided to have control over the African Americans who were living in countries outside the United States; they did this in order to prevent them from bringing to the international communitys attention, the reality of racism in the US(Dudziak, 2002, 79). For instance, the government seized the passports of W.E.B DuBois and Paul Robeson when they tried to expose the discrimination against the blacks in the US. A number of writers such as Richard Wright and Baldwin James were also forced to flee to other countries; from those regions they continuously subverted the governments strategies and policies on solving the racism issue. Josephine Baker, a musician was forced to move out of the country due discrimination in the US which according to her was seriously interferi ng with her musical career. Even after she denounced her American citizenship, the American government continued to silence her through propaganda, liaising with the media in the countries she was to discredit any information she gave and they also conducted investigations that could link her to communist governance in order to taint her name (Dudziak, 2002, 79). Even though the government was trying to silence the anti racism activists leaving outside America, President Truman felt that as a result of the cold war that was raging between the US and the Soviet Union, it was important that societal amendments were made in order to put the US at an advantage in this battle. As a result of this, the presidents committee on civil rights in 1947 was formed; this policy analyzed the need to tackle the civil rights issue in the country since it was seriously interfering with the countrys international relations. The President therefore recommended the senate to pass the civil rights laws that would abolish killings of the African Americans, allow the blacks voting rights and to establish a permanent civil rights body to look into the rights of the blacks. All these recommendations failed to see the light of the day; this was as a result of the prevalence of the Southern Democrats in a number of the senate committees who had all along been opposed to granting equal rights for the African Americans and the whites(Dudziak, 2002,). Truman felt frustrated by the senates conduct and so he decided to use the authority of the administrative and the lawmaking divisions in order to handle issues affecting the government. He therefore decided to integrate the US Armed forces through administrative command (Dudziak, 2006, 8). He also allowed the filling of the amicus curiae briefings that were in support of the cases that were presented by the NAACP at the courts. These updates laid emphasis on the need to abandon racism as it was becoming a drawback in Americas war against communism. The cold war therefore created a necessity to tackle the civil rights issues in the United States (Dudziak, 2006, 8). The changes brought about by the cold war. The cold war had a lot of impacts on a number of countries around the world. For instance, as a result of the cold war the communism system of governance ended, USA became the major super power, a number of the countries that had earlier on been under the Soviet Union attained independence, the Warsaw pact got dismantled(Buzzle.com, 2005, 4), the two states that earlier on made Germany were unified again to form todays Germany after the destruction of the Berlin wall(Buzzle.com, 2005, 4), the Soviet Union crumbled, the Vietnam and Korean wars erupted and both The United States and the Soviet Union established huge caches of various types of weapons (Buzzle.com, 2005, 4). Conclusion. The cold war refers to a conflict that existed between the United States and the Soviet Union; while united sates supported democracy, the soviet union supported communism, this sharp differences was the cause of tension as each of the unions tried to draw a large number of the other world countries towards its ideologies. The cold war also intensified because the US acquired a lot of atomic weapons, the Soviet Unions acquisition of a larger portion of the Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union was also worried about the US using the Western part of Europe to wage war against it. These factors and several others, created a serious tension between these two unions. At the end of the world war the Americans were looking for all the opportunities to improve their living standards but the minority groups such as the African Americans, Hispanics and the others felt exclude and as a result they started fighting for the rights to enjoy the privileges that the constitution had indicated for all the citizens. As a result of this, a number of civil rights movements were formed in order to fight for the rights of the African Americans that continuously became infringed by the white Americans. The US fought the Soviet Union by strongly criticizing its communist form of governance and this meant a war to promote human rights and democracy. The irony of all this was that the United States was also facing a serious domestic problem; racial discrimination. This made the USs efforts to fight communism futile as the foreign relations between the country and other democracies strained on the grounds that the US was abating racism. President Truman therefore made recommendations to the senate to pass bill that would promote equal rights and privileges for all its citizens. But since the recommendations failed to go through the congress, Truman used his executive powers to desegregate the armed forces. In 1964 and 1965, civil rights act and the voting rights acts were passed that allowed the African Americans civil rights as well as voting rights. Work Cited. Anonymous. Free Essays On Shakespeares Sonnet 5 :: Sonnet essays

Analysis of Sonnet 5 Those hours that with gentle work did frame The lovely gaze where every eye doth dwell Will play the tyrants to the very same, And that unfair which fairly doth excel: For never-resting time leads summer on To hideous winter and confounds him there, Sap check'd with frost, and lusty leaves quite gone, Beauty o'ersnow'd and bareness everywhere: Then were not summer's distillation left A liquid prisoner pent in walls of glass, Beauty's effect with beauty were bereft, Nor ir nor no remembrance what it was. But flowers distill'd, though they with winter meet, Leese but their show: their substance still lives sweet. This sonnet is fairly easy to read and understand, but there are a few subtle ways Shakespeare makes it more interesting. First, the "which" in line 4 seems to mean "that", but a pun arises when read aloud allowing "witch" to be replaced. This is definitley an option when referring to "Those hours," significant of time, as seeing time as a witch. Shakespeare does not hold time in such high regard, and therefore we get a slightly altered reading of line 4: 'and that unfair witch hastens your increasing age by fair means'. In this reading, time is both fair and unfair, much recieved as a child getting his deserved punishment. 5-6: '"Never-resting time" always forces summer into winter, where summer is unhappily detained'; 7-8: 'Where, the sap is encroached with frost, and the leaves of the tree have vanished, beauty being overly-covered and barren everywhere:'. 9-12: 'At that time summer was remembered through perfumes, (but) beauty's effect [the scent] was subsided through the perfumes [the scent is there, but the aesthetics are gone], and there was no remembrance what it really was'.

Communication Methods Essay

As a manager of a large rehabilitation center that provides short term care rehabilitation services, adding long term care services will require hiring and training new employees. It is important that managers understand the appropriate communication methods, why they are important, and what internal and external relationships that must be considered. There are a few appropriate communication methods manager can use in this organization such as emails, memos, team meetings, flyers, and powerpoint presentations. A mailing list can be implemented to send out emails with information or by sending flyers via USPS. Holding team meetings is a great to provide information to staff members as well as receiving employee feedback and suggestions to improve the quality of care. Although there are many methods of communication, holding staff meeting is the best way for information to flow from managers to employees, and employees to managers. Communication is important in the rehabilitation center as many services are provided by multiple physicians. â€Å"Communication between provider and consumers affects every facet on the health continuum from health promotion and disease prevention to assessment, diagnosis, and treatment† (Jones & Bartlett, 2014). The quality of care is dependent upon staff members working together to provide care. This requires effective communication to pass health information, and share knowledge with each other to find the proper treatment plan. The use of flyers in the community allows for communication between the organization and the community, informing them of the addition of long term care services. This is important to reach the organizational goals. There are many internal and external relationships that must be considered when expanding services. Internal relationships include managers of other departments such as marketing, and staff members. Marketing  managers have knowledge of the demand for long term care services in the community and can provide the manager with that information. Staff members may be useful to help provide long term care services or train new employees. â€Å"The success of new organizational forms depends on managing inter-organizational relationships through external communication† (Johnson & Chang, 2000). External relationships such as other organizations in the community as well as the community should be considered. Other organizations can provide insight on what services are currently available locally and the need for long term care. Reaching out to the community by hosting or attending events will help to draw in customers for the new service and gain information on cultural needs of the community. Communication is key to providing quality care in a busy rehabilitation center. The use of emails, flyers, and team meetins are great ways to effectively communicate with staff members. Communication is important to ensure proper care is provided and the patient is satisfied with the outcome. Internal and external relationships must be considered receive feedback on internal operations, and understand the demand for care in the community. References Johnson, J., & Chang, H. (2000). Nazis, Cucks ContraPoints Professor Ramos Blog

Nazis, Cucks ContraPoints â€Å"So, I used to be, little bit of a Man. I’m not proud of it.. We all make mistakes!†Says Natalie Wynn in her 2018 XOXO festival presentation. Natalie Wynn is a transsexual YouTuber known for her B-listing Youtube channel Contrapoints. Flashing a style of her own, she is instantly recognizable for her soft lit videos, colorful characters abundant in a flair of bourgeois and sometimes cringe worthy sex appeal. She discusses controversial subjects like Marxism, gender dysphoria, politics, Cucks and much more from a leftist angle. I came across Contrapoints through my best friend Monique Johnson, a feminist, college art teacher who loves debate. Granted my BFF has always had strange tastes, but she really one-upped herself with this one. She sent me a video of Natalie Wynn and I didn’t really know how to process the creature I was watching. At first it was a bit hard for me to sit through the whole video, but I did anyway. Partially because of my upbringing and of family influences distilling a kind of internalized homophobia about my own sexuality, Making me cringe the second I see someone else talk about their own sexuality publicly and comfortably. But then seeing this provocative trans woman talking about the taboos many are too afraid to discuss or even mention, was actually very refreshing. After really sitting down and watching the full length of one of her many 20 minute  videos, I saw that this Frank-N-Furter, transsexual, costumer was actually making  great points about hot-button iissues. This video left me curious and wanting more, I started digging around and exploring her channel to see what other kinds of material and content she covers. I came across an XOXO Festival video; A kind of public speaking program/festival based in Portland Oregon, similar to TedTalks. In this video, (Natalie Wynn, ContraPoints XOXO Festival (2018))  it shows Natalie standing on stage in front of a fairly large crowd of seated patrons, and she discusses her struggles with transitioning, her channel and what it stands for. Natalie, in her earlier career, pursued a Phd in philosophy but she turned away from this pursuit. In her words, â€Å"The examined life is actually not worth living†. Prior to her channel, she worked as a Uber driver, piano teacher, paralegal and what ever other job she could manage in the many chapters of her life. At this point, she was in an awkward stage of transition. Not quite a women, in the eyes of society, but also not quite a man, in the eyes of her own psyche. (Natalie Wynn at her home in Baltimore.) During this time she had made her channel, Contrapoints, she decided to put to use her education and experience. The channels main purpose was to counter and debate the points made by other videos on the web. Hence the name, Contrapoints. But with the internet being the internet, she dealt with the backlash that comes with going through â€Å"second puberty† for the whole online world to see and criticize. Leftist Twitter took to her as a representative for the entire trans community and this was simply unfair. She decided to collaborate with a few different Youtube channels and debaters on their programs discussing trans issues, unknowing of the consequences. While she made excellent points and countered arguments with obvious research and wit, she failed those debates in the eyes of her viewers because she was deemed unlikable due to her appearance. This damaged her reputation for a while and the leftist side of the internet turned against her. That is, until she took a slight change in direction with her channel by costuming into different personas to discuss the topics she was tackling in a back and forth style of banter. By slipping into a fictional setting of debate, she found a way of putting controversial topics on the forefront for open discussion while dampening the impact of negative criticism on her personal life. Her videos are a boiling pot of heated discussion on what needs to be addressed, asking questions that no one knew needed to be asked. â€Å"If you want an honest conversation about race on the internet, here’s what you do. You set your computer on fire, you flee to the forest, you drink a mimosa laced with toad venom and you simply wait for the wolverines to eat your legs.†Says Natalie Wynn in her Youtube video, America: Still Racist. She talks about racial demographics in large cities like Bal timore, where previous practices of racism have in a sense trapped families and future generations of African-Americans. Creating ghettos and making racial demographics in urban areas almost impossible to financially escape, through a process of Restrictive Covenants, Redlining, and Predatory Landing when Jim Crow laws were still in act. This kind of grouping creates hot spots of racial conflict by a means of separating, and this separatism continues to stay prevalent in the U.S. because of past racism. Natalie takes topics like these, that are heavy in Political jargon, bulky with information that are near impossible to find in the convoluted garbage bins of the internet and breaks them down in a way that makes all of her videos extremely informational and easy to digest. â€Å"Contrapoints offers us a sense of what it looks like to combat the emotional appeal of neo-fascists with something similar† (Cross), a critic taken from the website TheVerge.com, reviewing how Natalie Wynn has quickly become the new Oscar Wilde of Youtube by taking on the Alt-Right head on with research, facts and seduction. I’m extremely happy my best friend brought me to this channel and to Natalie Wynn’s content. Her discourse on the material she covers is unique, extremely brainy and funny. Even her earlier content brings up issues that are still relevant to todays issues that other debate channels try, but fail to hit the mark. She always finds a way to resolve and properly untangle the inner workings and complexities of the human condition. In my own opinion, I’d have to say, â€Å"Contrapoints is hands down the leading channel in terms of quality content, discourse, and diverse topic discussion on the internet to dateâ€Å". Siddhartha Gautama

Siddhartha Gautama Siddhartha GautamaI come to you in these words to help you find the way to enlightenment. It is a hard road to find the way. What do you think it will take to find enlightenment? To first find this answer you need to look around you and see our people. What are their struggles and what are the reasons? You have to find this to understand what is needed to find the way. From my time observing our people I have found a problem of suffering is not something that will go away or that we can cure. We must understand that suffering is a mere part of our lives. We must take the time to understand suffering so to find the way. So what types of suffering are we talking about? We are speaking of pain, misery, sorrow, disappointment, frustration, discontent, disaffection, pessimism, and the sense of unfulfillment (2005).The Suffering (Doctor Who audio)

Poem by William Wordsworth The World is too much us; late and soon Essay

Poem by William Wordsworth The World is too much us; late and soon - Essay Example Wordsworth uses contradictory words together, to describe his anger and helplessness at a world which is being destroyed, and yet progress cannot be stopped. His choice of words to conjure up images and sounds is truly extraordinary, and he uses the rhythm of the iambic pentameter of the sonnet to great effect. William Wordsworth is also known as one of the Lake poets along with his friend and mentor Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Together they are credited with ushering in the era of Romanticism in English poetry. William Wordsworth was born in the beautiful Lake District of Cumberland, and grew up surrounded by the beauty of nature. These beautiful surroundings nurtured in him a deep and lasting love for nature in all her wondrous moods. He referred to poetry as â€Å"the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings,† originating from â€Å"emotion recollected in tranquility†, yet there was a natural rhythm and poetic form to his poems. (Wordsworth, preface to Lyrical Ballads) His poem The World is Too Much With Us is a classic example of the many sonnets he wrote. Composed in 1802, the poem was first published in his work Poems in Two Volumes in 1807. In the early years of the nineteenth century, Wordsworth was deeply disturbed by what he saw as decadence in the form of material gr eed, to the exclusion of everything else. At this time he wrote many poems deriding the materialism of a world that was losing its spirituality, and he urged mankind in most of these poems to find that lost spirituality in nature. The World is Too Much With Us is a sonnet in the Petrarchan style modeled on the work of the Italian poet Petrarch of the early Renaissance period. It is also known as the Italian sonnet, which is a poem of 14 lines. This kind of sonnet is divided into two parts. The first eight lines are known as the octave and the next six lines, the sestet. Each of these parts has a special function in a Petrarchan sonnet. The octave is employed to state a problem or a

Curriculum in a Learning Institution Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Curriculum in a Learning Institution - Assignment Example According to Freire (2014), most the curriculum fails due to lack of consideration of the learners in the process of designing curricula. This, in turn, serves to exclude some of the students from the positive learning process. The main need of education in providing knowledge to transform the society remains left out. For a curriculum to be inclusive, the students ought to have an opportunity of dialoguing with their teachers or mentors. Nevertheless, the act of dialogue must have love, bravery, and critical thinking. Designing curricula that allow students to have a dialogue with their teachers are fundament in transforming learning process. This kind of education from humanist educator allow for the transformation of both educator and students. Students need to be oppressed in to love what they are being taught. Learning is the fundamental right to any child and I had the privilege of attending a public school. In my personal learning experience, I knew early enough what I had to in school. Being in the old classrooms for hours did not bother that much. I had a passion for education with an aim of becoming a better citizen to build the nation. I spent hours perfecting my knowledge in various subjects except for mathematics that proved torturous to my brain. I tried to spend lesser time in trying to understand the formulas and concept. I had completely lost interest in the subject and perhaps it was due to my arrogant teacher. He had least humility to discuss any difficulty we experienced in his subject imposing fear among us. I developed the negative attitude towards the teacher and lost interest in the subject he taught. Assessing the effect of my mathematics teacher to my learning influence, it is clear to me that teachers and school leader have roles in the impact of students’ atti tude towards learning. If the teachers embrace, the dialogue in their teachings and enable interaction rather than imposing their knowledge on the students (Freire, 2014).

John Steinbeck Essay Example for Free

John Steinbeck Essay Of Mice and Men (to now be referred to as M+M) is full of human suffering for a number of reasons. The foremost is that Steinbeck wants to paint a picture of the real life for men, and women, working in the unstable environment that was 1930s America. His book, although it is fiction, is based upon the reality of ranch life during the Great Depression. As Steinbeck released M+M in 1937, he would have had ample fact to base the novella upon truths. The book centres on the real tragedies of real men and the dream that was fantasised about and yet rarely achieved. By using reality as a base for his novella, Steinbeck allows the reader to empathise with the harshness and fear that is represented by ranch life. Although some parts of the book seem as though the characters have been through unbelievable scenarios, we must remember that to create the feeling of real human suffering, Steinbeck used a microcosm of all ranch workers. This is so we can see the full extent to which ranch life, the Dust Bowl and 1930s America, actually affected the masses. A main aspect of this suffering is the loneliness which all of the characters, bar George and Lennie, experience. In M+M Steinbeck has a small, yet effective, cast of characters, all of whom embody suffering in one way or another. The main characters are George and Lennie and Steinbeck uses them to express the longing for freedom. George is a victim of suffering in many ways. He suffers because he is bound to Lennie and must look after him. Although at points in the book, George expresses regret about having Lennie; he will not let him go for fear of being alone. George would rather look after Lennie than be on his own. Cause I want you to stay with me. George experiences the loss of jobs and therefore the loss of money through the Great Depression and also Lennies naivety, which often causes trouble for the pair, especially when coupled with Lennies strength. Reasons, for which, the pair was forced to run away from jobs in Weed. This, in turn, makes their lives harder as they struggle to stay financially stable and to find a place in which to live in relative comfort. George also suffers the loss of a dream. For a time, George has envisioned a house of his own in which he lives with Lennie. It has become a reassurance for the men, that everything will turn out right and that they should keep hope. It is the opposite of their suffering. Were gonna have a little house When George shoots Lennie all of this becomes false. There is no longer a sanctuary for the men because without Lennie the microcosm, their microcosm, of the American Dream cannot, and will not, come to fruition. This is where George experiences the mental anguish and suffering at losing both his best friend and his hopes for the future. Psychologically the suffering overwhelms anything that George has felt before and Steinbeck shows us the fragility of life and the unpredictability of the ranch. For Lennie, the suffering is that of a different kind. Due to his mental disabilities, he isnt affected by a fear of loneliness as the others are. To him, George will always be there. This does not mean that he feels no suffering throughout the story; in fact he perhaps suffers the most without realising it. Lennie is angry and scared when Crooks suggests that George might not come back. This is where Lennie suffers the most, he is victimised by Crooks and he doesnt know what to do. Crooks chooses Lennie to attack because he cannot do it to anyone else. In this there is a certain irony, as it is Lennies innocence and naivety which lend themselves to Crooks in bullying him. Spose he gets killed or hurt so he cant come back. Lennie shares the same ideals as George, especially that of the dream home they could have. In Lennies case, he is more preoccupied with tending the rabbits than what the benefits of not working could bring him. How I get to tend the rabbits. Lennie suffers as a child suffers; this is because, mentally, he is a child, despite the fact that he is physically a grown man. We see evidence of this child-like suffering when he blames himself for what has happened to their jobs, when he hallucinates by the brush. You do bad things He suffers from grief when he kills his mouse and his pup by accident and he also suffers at the hands of Curley, although he fights back, he still feels scared and vulnerable, as a child would. George is the one who tells him what he should do. Get im Lennie!.. I said get him. It is easy to assume that George uses Lennie for his own ends but, as we see in the story, this is not true. In fact when it comes to the ultimate suffering, Lennies death, George makes it more bearable for Lennie and shoots him with mercy. Steinbeck is trying to show that although ranch life was full of suffering, there were cases where true friendships/relationships might occur. However, Steinbeck also uses Lennies death to mean that hardly anything survived life on the ranch, whether it were friendships or people themselves. Slim and Carlson do not have their own cases of suffering, instead they symbolise the average ranch workers life. They suffer from low pay, poor quality of life and loneliness. The hardships of the ranches are shown in Carlson especially, as he has no feelings for Candys dog or Candy, only that the dog is making his life worse than it already is. God awmighty, that dog stinks. Although Slim suffers from the same difficulties as Carlson; he reacts in a different way. He is calm and considerate, embodying those who were kinder in the harsh life of the ranch.

Harley Davidson :: essays research papers

The purpose of this industry analysis is to develop understanding for Harley Davidson Inc. and the employee owned manufacturer of heavyweight motorcycles. We will focus on some of the distributing of products to domestic and international markets targeting men and women of all ages. The motorcycle industry is made up of five major manufacturers: four Japanese (Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki), one American (Harley Davidson) and some European companies (mainly BMW of Germany and some other Italian companies). Most companies market their motorcycles and accessories on a worldwide basis. Industry sales of motorcycles were shrinking in the early l990s because of the recession. Three types of products/services are being offered motorcycles, accessories, and financing services. Motorcycles: This is a loose term for some, however we are going to look at that would include motorcycles. Mopeds or scooters (with engines under 125ccwhich are used as an alternative to walking), accounting for about 17% of total motorcycle sales; lightweight motorcycles road bikes, dirt bikes, dual purpose bikes (with engines ranging from 125cc to 499cc), accounting for 51% of sales; sport motorcycles street bikes, and super bikes (with engines ranging from 450 to 749cc) accounting for 13% of sales; heavyweight motorcycles cruisers, touring bikes (ranging from 750cc to 1500cc) accounting for 19% of sales. Accessories: all leading manufacturers produce Aftermarket accessories, such as saddlebags, windshields, custom seats, helmets, and clothing items. Accessories can bring in a large amount of profit but they can also strengthen customer relations and customer loyalty. In order to succeed companies need to do a market analysis of what sales and what the customer base requests. Sales of accessories and parts make up 36% of total retail sales and are a viable area for producers to explore because people want something to differentiate their bikes. In the past, motorcycles were viewed as a cheap means of transportation. By 1992, they came to be viewed as a recreational, or a luxury item. This new perception of motorcycles led to the introduction of more expensive models with higher prices. This led to the introduction of consumer financing, one of the fastest growing service areas in the motorcycle industry. Financing Services: As motorcycle prices increase to above the cost some can afford out of pocket. Many customers are finding a need for financing within the dealership of the motorcycle company. Financing terms and payment arrangements are necessary to succeed and be competitive. The customers of motorcycles can be divided into two categories men and women.

Internal Controls Essay

The Company that held the most appeal and most overall steady growth of success was Amazon. com Inc. This company has had losses recently, but overall it has held firm among its management and profitability. The annual report for Amazon in the e-campus library showed phenomenal coverage for over the last fifteen years of reporting financials. In 2013, it has been ranked number 49 and the reason behind it is the technology factors of creating the Kindle Fire, which sold tremendously. The company’s earnings in 2013 has been in the billions. In 2012, the company made over $61 billion. That was a 27% increase due to the technology software that the smaller Kindle Fire introduced. Prime Instant Video Selection among Amazon which originated in 1998 has been steady with its growth. Now, as the Prime Video Selection makes its way into the spotlight within amazon. com for consumers, the results or profits are estimated to be outrageous for the company. Amazon. com not only has a company in the United States, but as well internationally. Electronic technology has allowed Amazon. com to start out as a small company and skyrocket and become a leading seller and company in America today. Digital media has expanded over 23 million people in television, books, and magazines. The company is doing exceptionally well. The company has over 88, 400 full time employees and shareholder numbers are at 3,075. ( University Library, Phoenix University XACC/210 May 29,2013 ) The company is an electronic shopping catalog type of business and its Internal Controls extend from management to data entry sophistication. I would think that since the website doesn’t give a precise use of how internal controls are conducted I would have to go with Enterprise Risk Management. This Internal Control is a type of software that links accounting and administrated functions into a total record keeping and reporting system that can be overlooked by management as well as the board of directors in that company. Often the board of directors, whose duty it is to oversee the ethical and commercial operations of a company and set policy, will access the ERM through their own intranet that allows them a secure online venue where they can review the company’s books and operations, upload their own documents, make notes and discuss the company in private. Securities and Exchange Commission: Management’s Report on Internal Control Over Financial Reporting and Certification of Disclosure in Exchange Act Periodic Reports) Overall I think that Amazon has good management internal controls pertaining to the type of business that it is. There are quite a few of employees, so management within this type of internal control can establish good reliability.

Responses to the Boasian School of Anthropology Essay

The Boasian school of anthropology, headed by Franz Boas, was among those that pioneered modern concepts in anthropology. The Boasian school was critical of overgeneralizing perspectives or theories in the sciences, including the cultural evolutionary school in anthropology, choosing instead to adopt rigorous empiricism in its approach. The Boasian school believed in the world having distinct cultures and that cross-cultural generalizing often made in the natural sciences are not possible in anthropology. The school today uses the â€Å"four field approach† that divides the field into socio-cultural, biological, linguistic and prehistoric anthropology. While Leslie White was educated in the Boasian school of anthropology, he later began to question the anti-evolutionary views of his early education. He developed and advocated an anthropological, ethical and political view of the world almost targeted against the Boasian school. Leslie White embraced two contradictory models of culture: the sut generts conceptions from his Boasian education and the materialist-utilitarian framework developed out of his concern with cultural evolutionism. White never reconciled the two but he definitely gave stress to the Boasian-based sut generts in case of conflicts. White feared that the Boasian school’s concept of cultural determinism represented an emasculation of anthropology and instead advocated science and evolution, particularly 19th Boasian School 1 century theories. White regarded culture as superorganic made up of the technology, social organization and ideology levels. It should be noted, however, that White still held on to the Boasian-based sut generts and that he still tended to downgrade the impact made by the natural environment on culture and society. Julian Steward was a fellow evolutionist with Leslie White. Differing slightly from White, Julian steward’s concepts of evolution and progress was not limited to 19th century concepts. Steward, who was a pluralist in terms of openness to other views, never sharply broke up with the Boasian school. But he did find anomalies in the historical particularism paradigm of the Boasian school. Steward viewed evolution as ‘recurrent forms, processes, and functions’, in opposition to Boasian’s repudiation of evolution and regularity in culture. He also perceived culture as superorganic, similar to a limited extent to White’s culturology. Steward’s multi-linear evolution aspect of his approach to anthropology differed from the extreme particularism of the Boasian school but without adopting the antithetically unilinear evolution concept of White. This January I Switched to Apple. What are You Tolerating in Your Life

This January I Switched to Apple. What are You Tolerating in Your Life I’d say it was a long time coming, given that I’ve had nothing but problems with my Dell PCs for the last †¦ oh †¦ 20 years? For the most recent 3 or so of those 20, several of my friends and colleagues have been begging and pleading with me to convert to Apple. Did I listen? No. Changing just seemed like way too much work. Then, in January, I hit a limit. My 1-year-old Windows 8 computer, whose operating system I had just reinstalled, was not working any better than it was before I reinstalled it. My programs were constantly going to â€Å"Not Responding.† Tech support could not fix the problem and was telling me I needed a more powerful computer with more RAM. Sales was telling me the 8 GB of RAM on my current computer should be plenty. I figured either sales was wrong or tech support was wrong, and Dell should either fix the problem or give me some amount of credit toward a new computer. They claimed to be unable to do either. It was decision time, and I was DONE with Dell. Perhaps you are celebrating, along with many of my friends, colleagues and even distant acquaintances, that I waltzed into an Apple store and bought a MacBook Pro. In the end, this change happened in an instant. It wasn’t easy getting up to speed on the MacBook. The delete button drives me crazy. The command button is located in the most inconvenient spot I can imagine. My files are all organized differently now. Outlook was downloading all my email repeatedly and I had to get tech support to get a duplicate deletion program. I needed a new way to access my accountant’s server so I could use my QuickBooks program. I had to call HP support to get my printer working wirelessly. I blew out two adaptors trying to connect the Mac to an external monitor. And there’s more. This is why I did not want to switch to a Mac. But get this: The computer doesn’t use battery power while it’s asleep. It wakes up immediately. I can leave my house carrying my laptop and no power cord and trust that the battery will last. The programs work and don’t slow down on me ever. And iCal integrates with Google Calendar without a 3rd party program! Most of the issues I faced were ramping up issues and are all resolved. And I get all the good stuff. I’m starting to be a proud Mac user. My question out of all of this is, â€Å"Why the heck did I wait so long?† You can ask any of my close friends and relatives and they will attest to the fact that I was spending hours upon hours with Dell tech support for years. I have never been happy with a Dell computer! And yet, I resisted change. Pure and simple. I kept choosing to upgrade to a â€Å"better† Dell, hoping it would solve my problems. It never did. People do this. Look at how many people stay in relationships that require hours of conversation to try to make them work. Look at how many of these people move in together, or get married, thinking that the â€Å"upgrade† will help. Or they have children in order to fix their relationship. Now that’s an upgrade! We so often avoid the risk of starting over with someone else because it would require an unknown amount of work – even if we have a strong inkling that ultimately the benefits would justify the investment. We resist change even if all our friends are telling us to â€Å"switch to Apple.† Many of us stay in jobs that are not a good fit. Even if we’re miserable, at least we’re dealing with a known quantity. I myself kept working for 10 years as a lawyer, because it was safe and provided a living wage, even though there was no amount of adjusting and mind talk that could make me enjoy that job. I even accepted a promotion (my â€Å"upgrade†) before reaching my breaking point and starting something new. The February issue of LeaderMag featured an article by Bruce Hodes, Five Ogres and an Angel, about the resistance to change in organizations. I love this quote which he shares: â€Å"Change is hard because people overestimate the value of what they have and underestimate the value of what they may gain by giving that up.† James Belasco and Ralph Stayer, Flight of the Buffalo (1994). Hodes asserts that two of the main elements blocking change are â€Å"comfort† and â€Å"drift.† Comfort is something we’re all familiar with. We humans like things to stay the same. We get attached to our routines like a warm blanket, even if they aren’t serving us. And drift, the pull of the current always in the same direction (toward the status quo), affects us whether in our homes or workplaces. Hodes’ advice: â€Å"Trust your intuition- be convinced that even in the face of resistance this is the way forward.† The payoff according to Hodes is Performance Improvement. I certainly got that with my MacBook Pro. My question to you is: Where in your life are you resisting change, falling victim to comfort and drift, when you really know it’s time to make a move? Where is there room for performance improvement in your life? Maybe it’s time to stop â€Å"upgrading† what you already have and to start something new.

International 80s Cinema essays

International 80's Cinema essays This decade did not have any important new movements, except for the British film industry which had which experienced a renaissance. The British film were a blending of the old and the new. These films were done with great craftsmanship. Even the best movies of this era were only moderately successful in the box offices. British films are going form beginning to move away from being conservative. Many of their movies are beginning to have a lot of sexual orientation on them. The British working class did not like the movies that were being produced . They said that they had everything ugly in them including the kitchen sink. The three most prominent directors of great Britain during this time was James Ivory, Bill Forsyth, Stephen Frears. The most important director of Western Europe was Spains Pedro Almodovar. He was not much of a story teller but more likely to put lose ends of comic together. Most of his movies consisted of sex and drugs. The French only produced a few outstanding films during this era. French director Paul Venhoeven directes both Robo Cop and total recall. The movies of West Germany are not as harsh as the 70s. A lot of their movies were love stories and other topics such as this nature, The Soviet Union, Poland, and Hungary produced the overwhelming majority of noteworthy movies(509). Movies were release that had been shelved by regimes because they felt they shouldnt be allowed to be seen . Directors of third world countries had many problems. There first problem was rare that they had the capital to make the movies. If they were able to make the movies most of their actors only spoke a regional language and the movie could only be understood by a small amount of p ...

How to Get ACT Scores, Step by Step

How to Get ACT Scores, Step by Step SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips So you've recently taken the ACT. Congratulations! But now you are probably wondering when and how you will be able to see your ACT scores. Where can you see your ACT scores? Read on to learn when ACT scores become available and how to check your ACT scores online. NOTE: Looking for ACT scores from before Spring 2008 or forgotten your ACT ID? Then you should check out our article on how to get old ACT scores first! When Do ACT Scores Come Out? Your ACT scores will be posted on the official ACT, Inc. website a few weeks after you take the test. They will not be emailed to you directly, so you'll have to access your scores yourself by logging on to your ACT account. Multiple-choice scores are usually available 10 days after the test, with your Writing scores added on about two weeks later (for exact dates, see our article on when ACT scores come out). Note that your Writing score will take a bit longer since it's being graded by actual people and not machines. // All ACT scores should be posted eight weeks after the test date at the very latest. (Your ACT scores could take a bit longer if you live outside the US or Canada.) Be aware that there is no way to speed up or prioritize your test scoring. The priority report option on the ACT website refers to sending scores to colleges- not getting a faster score report. Colleges will not be sent your ACT scores until the full report (including your Writing score, if you took the ACT with Writing) has been processed. How to Get Your ACT Scores: Step-by-Step Guide Now that you know when ACT scores come out, how can you actually see your ACT scores? Here is a step-by-step guide to teach you how. First, log on to your ACT Web Account; using the user ID and password you created when you originally signed up for the ACT. // If you forgot either your user ID or password, use the "Forgot User ID?" or "Forgot password?" links to retrieve your account info. Once you log in, you'll be taken to your ACT Student home page, where you will see a summary of your test registration dates. Click on "Your Test Dates And Scores" in the left column to get to your ACT scores: Next, you'll see a table with the date(s) you took the ACT, the type of test you took (ACT or ACT Plus Writing), and a link to view your scores. (Incidentally, you'll also see any test dates you signed up for and later cancelled, such as my September 2009 test in the screenshot below.) Click on "View Your Scores" to be taken to your ACT scores page: You will then be prompted to enter your password one more time. Don’t worry, it’s the same one you used before! Finally, you'll arrive at your ACT scores page. // On this page, you'll see your composite ACT score (out of 36), your section scores, and your subscores. The subscores are useful in that they give you detailed information about your subject area performance. Unfortunately, unlike with the SAT, with the ACT you won't get to see your exact raw scores. (For more information about how the ACT is scored, see our article.) If you click on the "Download student score report PDF" link, you'll get a PDF report with even more detailsabout your percentile scores, potential areas of improvement, and other pieces of information you can use to boost your ACT score! What to Do Once You Get Your ACT Scores Once you've seen your scores, the first step you should take is to determine whether you met your ACT goal score or not. Even if you didn't, were you pretty close to it, or pretty far from it? Your answer to this question will help you decide whether you should retake the ACT. // For example, if you were aiming for a 30 but got a 24, it'd probably be in your best interest to retake the test. In this case, be sure to focus on improving your weaknesses in your prep. On the other hand, if you were aiming for a 32 and got a 31, you might be satisfied with these results and decide not to retake the ACT. If your score is lower than you wanted it to be and you don't have time to retake the exam, you should definitely put in extra effort into making your college applications as strong as possible. Try to keep up your GPA and write a great personal statement so you can give yourself your best shot at getting accepted to college. Recap: How to Get ACT Scores This is pretty much all there is to getting your official ACT scores. Once again, you will not receive a score report by email or snail mail, so make sure you have your user ID and password ready to go the day your ACT results are scheduled to come out. In addition, once you've seen your ACT scores, take some time to determine whether they are high enough for your schools as well as whether you want to retake the exam or not. // What's Next? You've seen your official ACT scores. Now, the important question is what you should do with them. Should you retake the ACT? Figure out whether you should in our three-step guide. To what extent are filmic techniques such as camera angles used to Essay

To what extent are filmic techniques such as camera angles used to assert the overall importance of religious themes in Pulp Fic - Essay Example The camera shots are essential in every film analysis. Camera angle is another important technique used in analyzing a movie and in film making industry. They help to create the meaning of the film to those watching. The difference between camera angles and camera shots is that as the camera angle helps the viewer to differentiate the characters in a film the camera shots shows the amount of space and the setting. Camera angle has its examples, and they are the eye level angle, birds eye angle, Dutch angle and low angle. Other techniques include the Evangeline shots which is creating blurred images as a result of extreme close ups and zooming abruptly. Cinematography is another technique which combines all the above technique that is lighting, camera angle, and camera shots. Having discussed the above the difference between camera shots and camera angles should always be made (skwirk, 2013, 1) the film â€Å"Pulp Fiction† can be analyzed in more than two different perspectives . The first is use of the camera angles to state the importance of religious themes. The guide to this is due to the fact that it is a Christian based movie. In the search for the religious aspects, we bear in mind that as Christians, we are guided by the Ten Commandments that help us shape our behaviors in our relationship with God and other human beings. We find that despite, the movie pulp fiction being filled with violence and scenes unpleasing to the eye; it has hidden Christian themes both good and bad. For instance, Its director Quentin Tarantino makes the themes of immorality among humans, the paths that humans take differently in life, the risk of living recklessly and the inception of death visible to the viewer. With the leading man as John Travolta with co-actors Samuel L Jackson and Uma Thurman, camera angle technique helps the viewer’s grasp the relationship between the characters and bring us closer to their realization. The best example is in the scene where J ules (Samuel L. Jackson) comes to a near death encounter, and it is in this case that he starts posing questions about life, the power of God, and why his encounter with death never terminated his life. The film gives us the events where he ponders everything in his life and even quitting his job for the reason that it was to God’s sign for him to quit the bad things. There is also the situation in which we find Jules misquoting the Bible in a cold murder. This was in the encounter of Brett with Vincent and Jules the two hit men working for the feared kingpin Marsellus Wallace. They had gone to retrieve something valuable in a suitcase that was held by individuals that would be crooks led by Brett. The two men retrieve the belonging of Wallace and later kill Brett and Jules recite the Bible from Ezekiel 25, and it quotes â€Å"The path of the honorable man is overwhelmed on all sides by the iniquities of the self-centered and the autocracy of evil men. Holy is he who, in the name of contributions and good will, shepherds the scrawny through the gorge of darkness, for he is truthfully his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. I will hit down upon thee with great retaliation and fuming anger those who would effort to poison and obliterate my brothers. You will recognize my name is the Lord when I lay my reprisal upon thee.†(Biola, 2013). The ungodly themes that are condemned by the commandments and the actors tend to bend the command is in the situation
